Hunter-Gatherer Bodies in a Technological World: Thriving in an Environment We Weren’t Built For
We are not broken.
But many of us feel like we are. Stressed, exhausted, disconnected—from our bodies, from nature, from the rhythms that once sustained us. It’s easy to think that something is wrong with us when, in reality, we are living in a world that does not align with the way we are designed to function.
Our bodies, our nervous systems, our hormones—they were shaped by thousands of years of moving, gathering, hunting, resting, and living in deeply connected communities. And yet, here we are, sitting at desks, scrolling on screens, eating food that comes in plastic, and wondering why we feel overwhelmed, inflamed, or out of sync.
The Modern Mismatch
Women, especially, have been pulled further and further from the way our bodies were meant to thrive. Our ancestors moved their bodies daily—not in punishing gym sessions but through natural movement patterns: walking, squatting, lifting, stretching. They ate whole, unprocessed foods, not because they were “on a diet” but because that was what was available. They lived in sync with daylight, with the seasons, with their hormonal cycles.
Now? We are bombarded with artificial light that disrupts our sleep, told to suppress our natural rhythms with caffeine in the morning and melatonin at night, and expected to work, care, nurture, and provide at a relentless pace that never stops.
But here’s the truth:
We can’t hack our biology. We can’t override the fundamental needs of our bodies and minds without consequences.
And yet, knowing this, we still struggle to change.
The Barriers to Change (and the Excuses We Tell Ourselves)
Even when we know what we need, there’s always a reason why it feels impossible:
- "I don’t have time." We are busier than ever, yes. But sometimes, we mistake busyness for importance. We fill our days with tasks that drain us, often at the expense of the things that would restore us.
- "It’s too expensive." The wellness industry has capitalised on our deep longing for health, but real health isn’t about expensive supplements or luxury retreats. It’s about movement, sleep, food, and connection—things that don’t need to cost a thing.
- "It’s just the way life is." We have normalised exhaustion, stress, and burnout. But what if we stopped accepting it as the default? What if we challenged the systems, the pace, the expectations that keep us trapped in cycles of depletion?
Reclaiming Our Wellbeing from the Basics Up
If we accept that we are not broken but rather misaligned with the world we live in, the next step is to realign. Not perfectly, not all at once, but in small, meaningful ways:
- Move like a human, not a machine. Walk more. Stretch often. Breathe deeply. Move in ways that feel good, not just in ways that "burn calories."
- Eat like your body matters. Not perfectly, not obsessively, but with a focus on real, nourishing foods that make you feel alive.
- Prioritise deep rest. Sleep isn’t a luxury; it’s a biological necessity. Protect it fiercely.
- Connect with real people, in real life. We are wired for community, for shared experiences, for laughter and support. Social media is not a replacement.
- Create boundaries with technology. It’s not about rejecting modern life but about using it in a way that serves you, not the other way around.
Choosing to Thrive
Yes, we are living in a world we were not designed for. And yes, that makes things harder. But we are not powerless.
We can choose to listen to our bodies.
We can choose to honour our needs.
We can choose to step away from the chaos and towards a way of living that feels nourishing, even if the world around us doesn’t make it easy.
We are not broken.
We are simply remembering what it means to be well.
Finding Your Way Back to Yourself
But let’s be honest—knowing what to do and actually doing it are two different things. Changing lifelong habits, setting boundaries, and reclaiming your health can feel overwhelming, especially when you're trying to do it alone.
This is where integrative coaching comes in. It’s not about giving you another wellness plan to follow or telling you to "just try harder." It’s about helping you reconnect with yourself, listening to what your body and mind truly need, and finding sustainable ways to thrive in the life you already have.
Through deep listening, compassionate guidance, and practical tools, integrative coaching helps you navigate the barriers that keep you stuck—whether it's stress, exhaustion, or the endless feeling that you're not doing enough.
You don’t have to fight against your biology. You don’t have to accept burnout as inevitable. You can create a life that supports your health, your resilience, and your joy.
And if you’re ready to take that step, I’m here to help you find your way.
